Gianna Rahmer of Eldorado (in one of the closer finishes of her prep career) and Nicholas Ponte from Albuquerque Academy were the individual champions on Saturday at the University of New Mexico Cross Country Invitational at UNM North Golf Course.

Rahmer, a sophomore who has yet to place any lower than first in any cross country race (in New Mexico) since she started competing as an eighth-grader for the Eagles, won in a time of 17 minutes, 9 seconds.

Carmen Dorsey-Spitz of Moriarty was just 18 seconds behind, at 17:27, which makes this a fairly close margin of victory for Rahmer. Anna Hastings (18:12) of Albuquerque Academy placed third.

Ponte won in a thrilling finish against NIkko Mihan of La Cueva. Ponte crossed in 15:37, one second in front of Mihan. Judah Daffron from Taos (15:47) was third.

Academy’s boys, with 68 points, were the UNM team champions. La Cueva (122), Durango, Colorado (135) and Rio Rancho (151) were next in the standings.

Los Alamos (65) was 18 points lower than Durango atop the girls standings. Cleveland (131) and Academy (157) rounded out the top four.
