Las Cruces amateur boxer Joscelyn Olayo-Muñoz, a 16-time United States amateur champion, on Saturday added an international title to her trophy case.
Olayo-Muñoz, aggressive and in control throughout, defeated Italy’s Amelia Sula by unanimous decision in the women’s 106-pound final at the Brandenburg Cup youth (U-19) tournament in Frankfurt, Germany.
The recent Las Cruces High School graduate was a captain of the U.S. Brandenburg Cup team, which is coming home with seven gold medals and four bronze.
Sula, who’d defeated top-seeded German boxer Cinnia Hofmann in Thursday’s semifinals, repeatedly switched between right-handed and left-handed stances during Saturday’s championship bout. That tactic held no mystery for Olayo-Muñoz, who consistently beat the Italian boxer to the punch.
Sula tended to hold her hands low, and Olayo-Muñoz took full advantage, becoming more and more aggressive as the bout unfolded.
After the final bell, there was no doubt about the outcome. All five judges scored the bout for Olayo-Muñoz.
It was the Las Cruces teenager’s first international competition.
