PREP BASKETBALL
The number of undefeated teams in boys prep basketball? As of Wednesday, it is zero
Bosque School upsets 16-0 East Mountain in District 5-3A opener
And then there were none.
The last of New Mexico’s undefeated boys basketball teams was Class 3A’s fourth-ranked East Mountain, but the Timberwolves suffered their first blemish of the 2025-26 season on the West Side on Wednesday night, as eighth-ranked Bosque School surged down the stretch for a 55-49 victory in a District 5-3A opener.
“We have struggled all year,” Bosque coach Clifton Davidson said. “We were in a close game with St. Michael’s in the fourth quarter, we were in a close game with Robertson in the fourth quarter, and we couldn’t pull those games out.”
Those accumulated experiences certainly paid off Wednesday. And this East Mountain loss leaves the Bernalillo girls as the only team in either gender without a loss this season.
The Timberwolves (16-1), who were in trail mode for a large portion of this game, didn’t lead at all until there were just over six minutes remaining. They led 47-42 with 4½ minutes left after Eric Hofmann’s three-point play. Bosque School (8-6) outscored East Mountain 13-2 from there on out, and those two for the Timberwolves were on free throws.
“They made some plays for sure, so tip your cap to them. They executed well,” East Mountain coach Brad Hofmann said. “We had a couple of looks that were decent and we missed them.”
It was junior guard Josiah Wilson’s three-point play with 1:58 to go that broke a 47-all tie and put the Bobcats ahead for good. Twice, earlier in the game, he had gone into the lane looking to create, only to get called for an offensive foul. He drew a block from East Mountain’s Aiden Erickson on this play, as he made a one-handed, four-footer in the lane. He added the free throw for a 50-47 edge.
“I always attack the rim. They (the fouls) are not gonna affect me,” said Wilson, who finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds. “Take two charges, alright I’ll take another one, I don’t really care. I’m just gonna go back at them and that’s what I did, and I finished.”
Equally important was what occurred just two minutes earlier, as Bosque, down five at 47-42, had a five-point trip to tie the game.
Jordan Kruft buried a corner 3-pointer for Bosque, as East Mountain committed a foul underneath. The shot counted, the Bobcats retained possession, and scored a tying basket coming out of a timeout on a layup by Alex Starr.
“We did a lot better at coming back, not being down on ourselves,” said Davidson. “They stayed composed, they stayed focused, and we were able to run some offense, get into the things we knew we could have success with against this team.”
The quick start to league play had Davidson and his Bobcats smiling.
“I think we have the toughest district in 3A this year. With us, Sandia Prep, East Mountain, it’s gonna be a battle. Whoever wins this district sets themselves up for a top four seed at state,” he said.
Vicente Ortiz connected on five 3s and led the Timberwolves with 20 points. Hofmann added 14 points.
