Top hoops prospect to play for La Cueva

Dylan Chavez, one of the metro area’s top prep basketball prospects, will be playing for La Cueva High School next season.

The 6-foot-6 Chavez already was attending La Cueva even as he competed for ABC Prep in Albuquerque the last two winters. He said family considerations were one reason he’s going to wear Bear blue for his senior season.

“I kind of wanted to bring back a state championship to La Cueva, for the community,” he said, stating his other reason.

Although the NMAA not long ago created a rule specifically designed to limit players from leaving a special academy like ABC Prep for a high school without penalty, Chavez won’t be impacted as he already was a student at La Cueva.

Last year he committed to New Mexico State, but in the spring de-committed amidst the program turmoil in Las Cruces.

He has standing Division I offers from Evansville, Weber State, Air Force, UC Santa Barbara, Colorado State, UM Kansas City, North Dakota and Southern Utah.

“Nothing wrong with ABC,” Chavez said. “Just kind of wanted to take a different path.”
