United adds physical presence with forward Amang
Physicality in front of the goal has not been one of New Mexico United’s calling cards in recent seasons.
Enter Thomas Amang.
United took a sizeable step toward beefing up its front line Tuesday, signing Amang for the 2025 season.
The 27-year-old Cameroonian forward is a veteran of the USL Championship’s Western Conference wars, having played for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks, San Diego Loyal and Orange County SC over the past five seasons. He is a proven goal scorer with 28 USLC tallies, including 15 with Orange County in 47 appearances over the past two seasons.
The 5-foot-9 Amang is particularly dangerous on set pieces, using his strength to create scoring opportunities. It is an area where United has struggled over the past few seasons.
“Thomas has been a serial goal scorer wherever he has played,” NMU Sporting Director Itamar Keinan said in a club release. “We’re excited to welcome a player of his talent level and dedication to our club, and can’t wait to see what he will accomplish on and off the pitch for the Black & Yellow in 2025.”
Amang’s best USLC season came in 2022, when he racked up 11 goals in 32 appearances with San Diego. One of Amang’s goals came in a 3-3 draw with New Mexico on Oct. 9 in Southern California.
Prior to his two seasons in San Diego, Amang spent part of the 2021 campaign with Colorado Springs Switchbacks, scoring three goals in 13 appearances. Overall he has 29 goals and six assists in USL Championship play over 92 appearances. He played professionally in Norway and Spain before coming to the United States.
Tuesday’s signing brings United’s roster to 20 players ahead of Saturday’s 8 p.m. regular-season opener at Sacramento Republic FC. Amang will eligible for selection for the contest.
