UNM football: Brawley, Drzewiecki earn Mountain West honors
Colorado State tight end Rocky Beers is hit by New Mexico safety Austin Brawley during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game at University Stadium. Brawley was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week following the Lobos’ 20-17 victory.
New Mexico safety Austin Brawley was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior Ohio transfer made three total tackles (1.5 for loss) and intercepted two passes Saturday in a 20-17 win over Colorado State. He had missed UNM’s last eight games with a broken foot suffered in the season-opener against Michigan.
“I was itching to get back out there,” Brawley said in a postgame news conference Saturday. “I kept having to calm myself down last night and today before the game, because I didn’t wanna get too excited. (I) played my game, made plays and I’m glad we had a good team win.”
Brawley is the second Lobo to earn the honor this season, joining linebacker Jaxton Eck, who was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week after a 35-10 win over UCLA in September.
Kicker Luke Drzewiecki was named Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week after scoring eight points against the Rams. The 6-0, 186-pound senior was selected for the same honor following a 40-35 win over UNLV two weeks prior.
Drzewiecki hit all two attempted field goals and extra points Saturday, moving him to 12-for-13 and a perfect 32-for-32 kicking field goals and extra points, respectively. He is now second all-time in program history in points scored (251) and field goals (45).
Nevada running back Caleb Ramseur and quarterback Caleb Jones were named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively. The Wolf Pack notched their first Mountain West win in over two years Saturday, beating San Jose State 55-10.
OTHER HONORS: Albuquerque native and Wisconsin linebacker Mason Posa was named the “Crunch Time Player of the Week” by PorkRinds.com after he made a game-sealing tackle in a 13-10 upset win over Washington on Nov. 8.
