UNM golf: Lobos' season comes to an end at NCAA Championships
UNM sophomore Wyatt Provence tees off Saturday during the second round of the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. Provence carded an even-par 72 Sunday to lead the Lobos for the second-straight round.
The Lobos’ season is over.
New Mexico men’s golf was eliminated from the NCAA Championship on Sunday, failing to make the cut after three rounds of stroke play at Omni LA Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
The Lobos shot 10-over-par as a team Sunday to finish at 36-over on the week, good for 26th place in the tournament’s 30-team field. UNM needed to finish in the top 15 to advance to Monday’s final round of stroke play; the top eight then qualify for match play, determining a national champion Wednesday.
The Lobos have not advanced to match play since 2013.
After carding a one-under 71 on Saturday, sophomore Wyatt Provence (+9) led UNM for the second-straight day with an even-par 72. The West Texas A&M transfer bounced back from a 10-over 82 in Friday’s opening round to compile the best score of any Lobo this week.
Senior Carson Herron (+18) also turned in a strong finish Sunday, carding a 1-over 73. By competing in three-straight NCAA Championships, he joins his dad – former UNM great Tim Herron – as one of the few Lobos to do so in the program’s history.
“It means a lot,” he said last Monday. “Never really expected that (at the) start honestly, but it shows the progress I’ve made the four years I’ve been here, especially the last three years.”
Freshman Clark Sonnenberg (+13) shot a 3-over 75 while junior Mesa Falleur (+17) put up a 6-over 78. Sophomore Oliver Cage (+11) carded a seven-over 79.
Led by second-year head coach Jake Harrington, the Lobos notched top 10 finishes in 10 of 12 stroke play events this season, placing third at the Mountain West Championship and the NCAA Tallahassee Regional. Herron and Falleur were named to the All-Mountain West team, helping lead the team to its third-straight NCAA Championship appearance.
