As the transfer portal taketh, it also giveth.

And it’s certainly giving to New Mexico right now.

UNM has signed Montana State transfer running back Scottre Humphrey, previously 24/7 Sports’ top-ranked uncommitted back in the portal, the program announced Monday.

Humphrey, a first team All-Big Sky selection and FCS All-American, rushed for a team-high 1,386 yards and 16 touchdowns last season with the Bobcats (14-1). The 5-foot-10, 210-pound sophomore was rated as a three-star transfer and received offers from North Carolina, West Virginia, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech and Boise State before choosing UNM.

After losing running backs Eli Sanders, Javen Jacobs and Na’Quari Rogers in the portal, Humphrey represents the third leading rusher from a Big Sky team to join the Lobos: The program landed commitments from Idaho’s Deshaun Buchanan (567 yards, five touchdowns) and Weber State’s Damon Bankston (1,104 yards, six touchdowns) in December and January, respectively.

UNM also signed Sam Houston State transfer running back D.J. McKinney, the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, on Friday. The Lobos have added 30 transfers since head coach Jason Eck was hired in December.

A Seattle native, Humphrey surpassed 100-plus yards rushing in nine of Montana State’s 15 games last season. He ran for a season-high 160 yards with two touchdowns in a 44-14 win over Portland State on Oct. 19, his fourth game with two or more scores.

Humphrey also provided the final blow in Montana State’s dramatic 35-31 season-opening win at UNM in August, scoring from four yards out to put the Bobcats up for good. He finished with 140 rushing yards on the day as Montana State rushed for 362 total yards on the ground — the highest total allowed by the Lobos all season.

The Bobcats fell to North Dakota State in the FCS title game on Jan. 7, and Humphrey announced his intentions of entering the portal one day later. He’s set to join UNM with 1,819 career yards, 24 touchdowns and two years of eligibility remaining, representing perhaps the Lobos’ most accomplished transfer in recent memory.
