Volcano Vista has the lead after the first day of the Class 5A boys state wrestling tournament at the Rio Rancho Events Center.

The Hawks lead the field with 130 points through Friday’s opening rounds. District rival Cleveland is second with 112 points, followed by La Cueva (83.5) and Atrisco Heritage (82.5).

Individually, the first day of the tournament yielded no major upsets in 5A, and indeed the top two seeds in each of the 13 weight divisions are all still alive.

The Four Corners dominates the top of the Class 1A-4A division.

Aztec scored 92 points Friday, six in front of Bloomfield. Silver (76) and St. Pius (74.5) round out the top four in the team standings.

All of the top two seeds in each bracket advanced to Saturday morning’s semifinals — with the exception of Aztec’s Cayden Nevarez.

The senior lost in the semifinals at 172 points, taken down in overtime by St. Pius senior Santiago Aragon Roybal.

The girls tournament, which is one all-encompassing classification, is being led after the first day by Cleveland, with 59 points.

West Mesa (49.5) is second, followed by Atrisco Heritage (47) and Miyamura (42).

Three No. 2 seeds were ousted on Friday.

That included Albuquerque High’s Vanessa Ramos in the quarterfinals at 100 pounds, Brielle Lucero of Farmington at 114 where she fell in the first round, and Lilly Shoemate-Means of Moriarty, who lost in the quarters at 138 points.

The semifinals will be in the first session Saturday, at 10 a.m.

The championship matches in all three tournaments are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
