Friday (Oct. 24)

---> Cleveland 49, Volcano Vista 13

According to Cleveland head coach Robert Garza, the Storm are peaking at just the right time.

That was evident Friday night, when the Storm (8-1, 4-0) scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams to roll to a 49-13 victory over District 1-6A rival Volcano Vista (6-3, 2-2) at Nusenda Community Stadium.

“I think we're starting to hit our stride,” Garza said. “This is a time of year where you want to be playing your best football, and I think we're starting to get there. That's a really good football team. They play really, really good defense — so something to be proud of tonight.”

Perhaps the most spectacular play of the evening occurred late in the second quarter when Storm sophomore wide receiver Evan Nañez returned a punt 85 yards for a score to give his team a 15-0 advantage.

Six weeks ago, the Sandia Matadors would gladly have jumped at the opportunity that now stands in front of them.

In the middle of September, the young Matadors and new coach Tylon Wilder were 0-4 and trying to find a rhythm and an identity. Wilder had said all along he thought Sandia would probably be a better second-half team than first-half team.

Week 10 is now in Sandia’s rear-view mirror, and the Matadors, after their 38-14 win Friday night at Wilson Stadium over Albuquerque High, can pretty much play themselves into the postseason in Week 11.

Rio Rancho 26, Farmington 14

At Rio Rancho, with a district championship game against their rival set for next week, you could say Friday night’s matchup with the Scorpions could’ve been a trap game for the Rams.

Rio Rancho’s defense thought otherwise, as the Rams (6-3, 4-0 in District 1-6A) extended their winning streak to four games.

“We've adjusted defensively,” Rio Rancho coach Nate Pino said. “Some personnel stuff, we're playing a lot better.”

A 7-0 start for Farmington was met with a strong answer, with the Rams recorded a fumble, interception, and several turnovers on downs in the matchup.

In Tome, Class 4A’s second-ranked Sartans (7-1, 4-1 in 2-4A) routed the Jaguars (4-5, 2-3) with another superb offensive showing.

Curtis Flakes III caught two touchdown passes, as did Cayl Cox-Liggins, as quarterback Isaiah Carpenter threw four scoring passes altogether and also rushed for a TD.

Junior tailback Hershul Olloway Jr. rushed for 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and he also returned a punt for a score.

---> Las Cruces 53, Carlsbad 28

In Carlsbad, Danny Amaro rushed for four touchdowns for 6A’s top-ranked Bulldawgs (9-0, 5-0 in District 3-6A), and quarterback Gunnar Guardiola threw for a pair of TDs, and he even caught a touchdown pass in this one-sided victory over the Cavemen (5-4, 3-2).

In Las Vegas, quarterback RJ Montoya scored all four touchdowns for the fifth-ranked Huskies (7-3, 2-2 in 2-3A) closed out their regular season with a resounding victory over the third-ranked Dons (4-5, 1-2).

Kingsley Fritz finished with over 100 yards rushing for Hope.

---> Albuquerque Academy 30, Portales 20

At Greyhound Stadium in Portales, the fourth-ranked Chargers (5-4, 3-2 in 2-4A) had a huge night running the ball, with 200-plus combined yards from Zachary Waghorn and Ryan Williams as Academy snapped back after a tough home loss the previous week to Silver.

Receiver Gage Conway stepped in to play quarterback Friday for Academy, and threw for a score. Conway also nailed three field goals.

---> Legacy Academy 28, Tucumcari 6

In Tucumcari, Xander Chavez continued his hot play of late, as he rushed for 225 yards and a touchdown as the fourth-ranked Silverbacks (8-1, 3-0 in District 2-2A) took over first place in their league.

Raton (5-4, 3-1) upset No. 1-ranked Santa Rosa (8-1, 3-1) 15-14 on Friday night; the Lions visit Legacy Academy next week, and now a three-way tie for first is certainly possible in that district.

JD Salazar was another standout for the Silverbacks; he had 10 tackles, two forced fumbles, and a blocked punt that led to a safety.

---> Artesia 24, Goddard 14

At Bulldog Bowl in Artesia, 5A’s top-ranked team (8-1, 6-0 in 2-5A) saw its defense dominate against the visiting fourth-ranked Rockets (6-3, 4-2).

Bryce Parra had all three Artesia touchdowns, two on the ground and a third on a reception.

---> Piedra Vista 28, Cibola 7

At Hutchison Stadium in Farmington, the Panthers (4-5, 1-3 in 1-6A) snapped a four-game losing streak and almost certainly punched their playoff ticket with a solid victory over the reeling Cougars (5-4, 1-3).

Saturday (Oct. 25)

---> Los Alamos 47, Valley 10

There were several goals the Los Alamos Hilltoppers set out for themselves in this 2025 prep football season.

They hit the first of those milestones on Saturday afternoon.

Junior tailback Jordan Herrera had what can best be described as a quiet 230 yards and a touchdown, and Los Alamos — the only undefeated team in Class 5A — clinched the District 1-5A championship, beating Valley 47-10 at Milne Stadium.

“These guys, last November, we had our first meeting, and we set our goals,” Los Alamos coach Garett Williams said. “That guy right there (gesturing to Herrera) said, ‘We’re undefeated. That’s the goal. That’ll take care of the district championship.’ “

Senior quarterback Hayden Watkins threw a pair of first-half touchdown passes in a game the Hilltoppers were in control of all the way.

He threw 23 yards on a swing pass to Dylan Baca, and a 61-yard hitch-and-go toss to a wide open Carlo Baca. Ben Brousseau added a 6-yard TD run for a 21-3 lead at halftime.

In the early game at Wilson Stadium, the seventh-ranked Bears (7-2, 6-0 in 2-6A) made quick work of the Demons (4-5, 2-4) and scored in all three phases.

Isaiah Goree returned a punt for a TD, Brody Clark brought an interception back for a score, Jhett Kinghorn returned a fumble for a touchdown, and Kobe Cooper caught two touchdown passes.

---> Manzano 36, Silver 25

In the late game at Wilson Stadium, Aiden Erickson returned an interception for a touchdown and was over 100 receiving yards, and Broden Price rushed for over 100 yards with a TD as the unranked Monarchs (4-5, 2-3 in 2-4A) captured a must-win game against the third-ranked Colts (6-4, 2-4).

There is a three-way tie for fourth place in this incredibly competitive district, with Manzano, Portales and Valencia all at 2-3. Silver’s regular season ended Saturday, and despite being ranked third in the state, the Colts are seventh and last in the 2-4A standings.

---> Bloomfield 62, Espanola Valley 12

In Espanola, quarterback Manuel Chavarria tossed five touchdown passes as Class 4A’s No. 1-ranked team (8-1, 6-0) and the defending state champion, officially locked up the District 1-4A championship.

The Bobcats defense added two pick-6s in the win.
