Thursday (Aug. 28)

--> Las Cruces 38, Volcano Vista 20

Senior tailback Danny Amaro rushed for four touchdowns, all in the first half, and No. 2-ranked Las Cruces beat No. 3 Volcano Visa 38-20 in an attractive Class 6A showdown game Thursday night at the Field of Dreams.

Amaro scored twice in the final eight minutes of the first half, including a 29-yard run late in the second quarter, to give Las Cruces (2-0) a 28-14 lead.

“Danny had a great night, and we had a pretty good night all the way around offensively,” Bulldawgs coach Mark Lopez said.

Amaro also had four rushing TDs in the opener last week against Mayfield.

--> Cibola 46, Sandia 24

At Wilson Stadium, Cibola scored the final 28 points of the game, all in the second half, as the Cougars (1-1) gave new head coach David Howes his first win with his alma mater.

Sandia (0-2) led 24-18 in the second half. Cibola scored to take a 25-24 lead and pulled away down the stretch against the Matadors.

Cibola won the second half 36-6.

Quarterback Hayes Baum had a big game for the Cougars, rushing for about 100 yards and four touchdowns and allowing him to overcome a pick-6 he threw in the first half that staked Sandia to an 18-10 lead.

--> Bernalillo 14, Highland 8 (OT)

At Milne Stadium, in a game that was 2-0 for a majority of the night, all of this game’s fireworks occurred in the final 90 seconds of regulation and overtime.

The Spartans (2-0) hit an 85-yard touchdown pass with 65 seconds left to tie the game 8-8. The Spartans, after a 15-yard penalty, missed the PAT, necessitating the overtime.

Just in the final minute of the fourth quarter, Bernalillo blocked a punt that led to a last-second field-goal attempt, which was in turn blocked by the Hornets.

Highland (1-1) went first in OT, but Bernalillo intercepted a pass on fourth down.

On the first Spartans snap, Ulysses Castro lofted a 10-yard fade route to Ivan Ruiz in the end zone for a walkoff score.

Friday (Aug. 29)

--> Cleveland 49, Los Lunas 3

Well, Cleveland got its defensive questions worked out for at least a week.

After Centennial hung 42 on the Storm last week, Cleveland coach Robert Garza was running a little hot, even after a game his football team won by two touchdowns.

The Storm defense kept Los Lunas out of the end zone entirely in Week 2, and the state’s top-ranked Class 6A team, on the road for the second straight week, rolled the 10th-ranked Tigers 49-3 on Friday night.

Evan Nanez, the hottest player in Class 6A this side of Las Cruces tailback Danny Amaro, scored three touchdowns for the second straight game, including an 80-yard touchdown run on a jet sweep on the first play from scrimmage just 11 seconds in.

--> Pinnacle (Ariz.) 44, La Cueva 0

An angry Pinnacle Pioneers team came to the Duke City — or at least it seemed like it based on their performance.

The Phoenix-based power in Arizona’s Class 6A took out a year’s worth of frustration on La Cueva with a 44-0 victory at Wilson Stadium on Friday night. One year prior, the Bears staged a miracle rally in Arizona, scoring 15 points in the final 127 seconds of regulation en route to a sometimes chippy, double-overtime victory.

“I don't know (about) angry, but it definitely felt like that game got away from us,” Pinnacle coach Dana Zupke said. “We felt like we had the game towards the end, but Cam Dyer, Mason Posa are amazing players and they just took over, and honestly, the whole La Cueva team just didn't quit.

“That haunted us, but I also think it helped us on our journey.”

--> Rio Rancho 55, Clovis 0

In Rio Rancho, the Rams’ defense registered a fumble, an interception and a blocked punt, all in the first quarter, and Rio Rancho won its second straight to open the season.

And the offense, led by QB Micah Takahashi, put up 42 first-half points on the Wildcats (1-1).

“(Defense) absolutely set the tone,” Pino said. “It creates opportunities for the offense. We're playing on short fields, which helps us out a ton. They were flying around, great energy from the start.”

Senior cornerback Quintenn McKinley hauled in his third interception in just two games. Senior receiver Parker Miller put on a career-high three-touchdown night, with senior running back Ethan Rolon adding two touchdowns on the ground.

The Rams are at Las Cruces on Thursday.

“We got a darn good Las Cruces team that we're gonna go visit,” Pino said. “That'll give us a little bit of a barometer to see where we're at, because they're a top-tier team, for sure.”

--> St. Pius 34, Grants 20

In Grants, the Sartans (2-0) pulled away from the Pirates (1-1) in the second half.

Hershul Olloway Jr. rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns for St. Pius. Curtis Flakes III had a 76-yard kick return for a score and also intercepted a pass. And Chase Nelson registered three sacks for the Sartan defense.

--> Piedra Vista 27, Bloomfield 22

In Bloomfield, Kael Farley’s 5-yard run late in the fourth quarter was the game-winner, as the Panthers (2-0) ended Bloomfield’s 12-game winning streak. The Bobcats came into the game ranked No. 1 in Class 4A. They had won 23 of their last 24 games going back to the 2023 season.

--> Artesia 51, Hobbs 41

At Bulldog Bowl, the game was up in the air until Bryce Parra returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown with 3½ minutes remaining, and Artesia (2-0) won a wild one against the Eagles (1-1), a game with seven lead changes.

Parra had his second huge night in as many games, with over 200 rushing yards. He had a rushing TD, a passing TD and the kickoff return.

Jack Byers added a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Bulldogs.

--> Moriarty 53, Shiprock 0

In Moriarty, Mario Romero returned the opening kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown, setting an early tone for the Pintos (1-1) in their mercy-rule victory over the Chieftains.

Romero also rushed for 101 yards, and TD runs of 39 and 47 yards.

Mateo Griego-Manley also was over 100 yards on the ground for Moriarty. He finished with 109, and three scoring runs, of 7, 50 and 43 yards.

--> Gadsden 35, Valencia 12

In Anthony, N.M., five different Panthers reached the end zone as Gadsden (2-0) downed the Jaguars (1-1), who have traveled about 900 combined miles in the first two weeks, to Kirtland Central and Gadsden.

--> Manzano 35, Rio Grande 0

At Milne Stadium, sophomore Broden Price returned a kick for a touchdown, and also added a pick-6 as the Monarchs (1-1) downed the Ravens (0-2).

--> Alamogordo 27, Roswell 13

The contest in Alamogordo between the Tigers and the visiting Coyotes was 20-6 for Alamogordo when the facility was cleared in the third quarter due to security reasons. The teams finished the game late Friday night with no fans.

--> Santa Fe 39, Belen 26

The Santa Fe-Belen game in Belen was one of the craziest of the night, with the Demons (2-0) scoring the first 20 points and also the final 19 in a 39-26 win over the Eagles (0-2).

Saturday (Aug. 30)

--> Hope Christian 12, Legacy Academy 6

RIO RANCHO – It was a dominant performance by the Hope Christian Huskies — inasmuch as it is possible that a game that finishes 12-6 can be dominated by one team.

But, save for a superbly designed, perfectly executed trick play that led to Legacy Academy’s only touchdown, Hope was, in fact, in control Saturday afternoon as the Huskies (2-0) held off the Silverbacks (1-1) in a game at Rio Rancho High School.

Quarterback RJ Montoya’s 2-yard touchdown run with 5:24 remaining broke a 6-6 tie.

“We stayed the course,” Hope coach Fernando Salinas said. “We just need to be a little more relentless to finish drives, have that urgency to get it done.”

--> Albuquerque High 34, Valley 7

At Milne Stadium, senior running back Alberto Landeros took a beating Saturday afternoon, having to be helped off the field no fewer than three times.

But he was awfully good when he was in the game, rushing for 152 yards and a touchdown, and he had about 90 yards of other carries, including a long touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, which was erased by penalty.

“For these first two weeks, for having a lot of young guys in spots, a lot of new guys in spots, we can be happy being 2-0,” Bulldogs Desmond Anaya said.

--> Lovington 49, Portales 24

In Lovington, the Wildcats finished off a strong performance in a game that began Friday night but was postponed by weather.

The game between these longtime rivals resumed at 2 p.m. Saturday. The teams only played about nine minutes on Friday.
