Only one word seems fitting to describe a night like this one: Indescribable.
Consider this: The Atrisco Heritage Academy football team had one-tenth of one second left on the clock Thursday night, in a game that was tied at 64 with Eldorado. An absolute epic of a battle that was a blink of an eye from extending into overtime.
And then consider what happened next, because there is unlikely to be a more spectacular or memorable finish to any prep football game in New Mexico this season.
Backup quarterback Landon Griego was brought in for the final two plays for Atrisco Heritage; two plays was all it took for the Jags to post one of the greatest wins in the history of the program.
Valley 35, St. Pius 0
Griego heaved a 37-yard, deflected Hail Mary touchdown pass to Andres Villalobos in the end zone on the game’s final play, and the Jaguars walked off the Eagles in stunning fashion, 70-64 in a three-hour, 30-minute carnival ride at Nusenda Community Stadium.
At Milne Stadium, Bronson Vigil scored a pair of first-half touchdowns, including one on a fumble return, and Daniel Garcia III for the second time this season returned a kickoff for a touchdown as the Vikings (2-1) blanked the Sartans (1-2).
Vigil’s fumble return late in the first half staked Valley to a 21-0 lead.
Garcia took the opening kickoff of the second half 95 yards for a TD and a 28-0 bulge. Garcia also returned a kickoff for a score on opening night against Bernalillo.
Valley’s defense has only surrendered 15 points through three games.

Rylan Leathers caught two fourth-quarter touchdown passes and Amarillo stopped Cleveland's Harris Mbueha on what would have been a game-winning 2-point conversion to hang on for the win in Rio Rancho.
Host Cleveland still dominated in the first half, and led 21-6 heading into the fourth period.
The Storm (2-1) scored a touchdown in each of the first two quarters, with Mbueha capping a 12-play, 62-yard drive on a 2-yard run in the opening period.
In the second quarter, after the Sandies (1-1) coughed up a Strat Shufelt punt and Isaiah Yannis recovered it for the Storm, Hoffman found tight end Jon Baca in the end zone for a 9-yard TD pass.
Artesia, the defending Class 5A state champions and the No. 1-ranked team in the state, made its only regular-season visit to the metro area, and had no trouble dispatching Belen, winning 51-0.
Senior quarterback Nye Estrada was 12-for-15 and 195 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, when this game was decided. The Bulldogs (3-0) led 36-0 at halftime.
Estrada capped off the game’s first drive with a 6-yard scoring pass to Juan Diego Duran. With a 2-point throw, it was 8-0 barely 2½ minutes into the game.
Running back Frankie Galindo supplied the next two touchdowns for Artesia, scoring on a 20-yard run late in the first quarter, and adding a 6-yarder early in the second quarter.
At Milne Stadium, the eighth-ranked Matadors (3-0) stayed perfect, cruising past the Bulldogs (1-1) before a big crowd at Milne.
Hunter Maldonado was the workhorse for Sandia, rushing for three touchdowns.
Cruz Rivera threw for a TD for the Matadors, whose defense continued to perform well.
Sandia is idle next week, and emerges on the other side to face Volcano Vista.
At Nusenda Community Stadium, senior quarterback Elijah Brody combined for six touchdowns as the Mustangs (2-1) beat the winless Cougars (0-3).
Brody threw four TD passes — two of them to Ricky Martinez — and also rushed for two scores to lead West Mesa.
The Mustangs’ defense also forced three turnovers in the victory.
Farmington had pulled within five at 21-16 late in the third quarter, but the Tigers answered with two TD’s over the next four minutes.
Ethan Olguin caught a key touchdown pass for Los Lunas that gave it a 33-16 advantage early in the fourth quarter.
Gage Marquez had two interceptions and also a rushing TD for Los Lunas.
The Tigers, coach Greg Henington said, were anxious to pay Farmington back for a win the Scorpions had at Los Lunas field a year ago.
“We’ve been fired up about it all week, for sure,” Henington said. “We felt a little embarrassed last year, so it was a little redemption thing. … We’re super excited.”
Los Lunas has another tough road trip ahead next week, visiting 3-0 Roswell, Class 5A’s second-ranked team.

Aaron Ocampo and his quarterback, Daniel Hernandez, were coming at this like two sides of the same coin.
Ocampo, the coach of the Centennial Hawks, viewed Saturday afternoon’s showdown game against La Cueva through one set of eyes.
Hernandez’s POV was similar, and yet not so much.
“There was urgency,” Ocampo said. “But more for us to be the type of team we need to be.”
Said Hernandez: “We made this a priority. We had to win this.”
And, behind Hernandez’s stellar dual-threat activities, win it the fourth-ranked the Hawks did, holding off a late charge from the second-ranked Bears for a victory at the Field of Dreams in las Cruces in New Mexico’s premier prep football matchup of Week 3.
At Nusenda Community Stadium, the third-ranked Hawks (3-0) got another 100-yard-plus game from running back Alijah Gonzales — his third in as many weeks — who scored a pair of touchdowns in Volcano Vista’s win over the Cavemen (1-2).
Ilijah Hanson threw for two touchdowns for the Hawks.
At the Academy, Jett Galles rushed for three touchdowns, two in the first half, and the 4A Chargers (2-1) downed the visiting 3A Huskies (2-1).
Galles had scoring runs of 1 and 6 yards in the second quarter, and added a 45-yard touchdown in the third quarter for that 34-14 lead.
Lucas Tracy had a TD pass to Andres Grine, and Ryan Williams scored on a short run also for Academy.
