Thursday (Sept. 4)

--> Las Cruces 47, Rio Rancho 22

Mayfield couldn’t solve Danny Amaro. Volcano Vista was equally vexed. Neither did the Rio Rancho Rams have an answer.

Cleveland, you’re up next.

If the Las Cruces High senior running back didn’t do another thing the rest of this prep football season — didn’t rush for another yard, didn’t score another touchdown — he could already have been judged, by most any metric, to have had a terrific season.

We are through Week 3. Amaro is well on his way toward far beyond terrific.

“Praise to my O-Line,” Amaro said. “They let me do whatever I want.”

His five-touchdown performance on Thursday night at the Field of Dreams, which required less than three quarters of his time, propelled No. 2-ranked Las Cruces to another lopsided victory, this one 47-22 over No. 5 Rio Rancho.

Friday (Sept. 5)

--> Cibola 35, Eldorado 14

There’s a sense of the inevitable when Cibola is in the red zone and Hayes Baum enters the game.

That was certainly the case Friday night, as the senior quarterback/linebacker punched in four touchdowns to lead the Cougars (2-1) to a 35-14 victory over Eldorado (1-1) at Nusenda Community Stadium. Baum scored on runs of 2, 1, 17 and 8 yards — the last two within the game’s final seven minutes to put the game out of reach.

“Man, I always revert back to Tim Tebow,” Baum said. “I mean, when I get on that ball and that ball's in my hands, I don't think I'm going to be stopped.

“… When it comes down to it, I know that I've outworked everyone on this field. I mean, I just feel confident when I get in those situations.”

--> Cleveland 57, Clovis 0

In Rio Rancho, sophomore Evan Nanez had 24 of the top-ranked Storm’s points, and Cleveland (3-0) destroyed the Wildcats (1-2) in just two quarters.

Senior quarterback Jordan Hatch tossed six touchdowns, with four of them going to Nanez. It’s the most receiving touchdowns in a game by a Storm player since 2021, with Nanez’s monster night giving him nine touchdowns and three-straight 100+ yard games on the year.

--> Alamogordo 31, Albuquerque High 20

Respect for Alamogordo Tigers football, especially from up north, has been hard to come by.

Whether they like it or not, that's largely been due to a mix of scarce opportunity — they almost never play in the Albuquerque metro area — and a lack of winning big games in big moments.

Over the past eight days, the Tigers have done both.

Friday night, a week after knocking off perennial 5A power Roswell at home, respect hardly came easy for the Tigers.

But Nathanael Best made sure it did come.

The senior quarterback threw for a score and ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally the Tigers to a 31-20 win over Albuquerque High on Friday night at Milne Stadium, improving to 3-0 on the season.

--> Manzano 22, Del Norte 0

At Wilson Stadium, Aiden Erickson caught touchdown passes of 60 and 80 yards, and the Monarchs (2-1) blanked the winless Knights (0-3).

--> Belen 28, Valencia 27

In Tome, Chalito Cano scored a touchdown, and also added the game-winning two-point conversion with 57 seconds remaining, and the Eagles (1-2) came from behind to beat their county rivals, the Jaguars (1-2).

--> Hope Christian 24, Albuquerque Academy 21

At Academy, senior quarterback RJ Montoya scored on two touchdown runs that put the Huskies (3-0), the fifth-ranked team in Class 3A, ahead by 10, and Hope Christian held off a comeback by Academy (2-1), the fourth-ranked team in 4A, down the stretch.

--> Highland 26, Taos 20

In Taos, William Anchondo was over 100 yards rushing with a touchdown, Andres Acosta scored twice, and Jose Tapia added a special teams touchdown as the Hornets (2-1) won a tight road game against the Tigers (0-3).

--> Bernalillo 19, Portales 13 (OT)

At Greyhound Stadium in Portales, the Spartans (3-0) continued their exciting start, with a third straight dramatic victory.

Ulisses Castro threw a long TD pass to Mario Molinar that tied the game at 13. The Spartans’ defense intercepted a Rams pass on the first possession of overtime, and then won it on their possession.

Bernalillo attempted a field goal to win it, but the placekicker was roughed. Molinar scored soon after to walk the game off for the Spartans.

--> Moriarty vs. St. Pius, canceled due to weather

In Moriarty, the Pintos had Class 4A’s No. 1 team, St. Pius, down 14-0 in the first quarter on touchdowns by Devin Ortiz and Mateo Griego-Manley, but weather issues didn’t allow the teams to play any more than that and eventually officials decided to cancel it rather than resume it on Saturday.

--> Hobbs 37, Roswell 27

In Hobbs, the Eagles (2-1) defeated 5A’s second-ranked Roswell, 37-27. Junior Medrano threw a TD pass for Hobbs and rushed for two more, and Adrian Mora also scored a pair of touchdowns.
