Thursday (Sept. 25)

---> La Cueva 49, West Mesa 0

The 0-2 start is long gone. And now, the La Cueva Bears turn to the next two dates on their schedule, two Friday nights that will likely determine much of their fate — and the fate of others — in this 2025 prep football regular season.

Sophomore wide receiver Chris Lopez not only scored the first touchdown of his varsity career Thursday night, he had three of them, and the No. 6-ranked Bears also blocked a punt that was returned for a score in a 49-0 District 2-6A homecoming thumping of West Mesa at Wilson Stadium.

La Cueva (3-2, 2-0) scored touchdowns on its first two drives and never looked back as it rolled to its third straight victory.

At Milne Stadium, Hilltoppers junior tailback Jordan Herrera had another huge night, going over 1,000 yards for the season and reaching the 20-TD plateau with nearly 200 yards and four scores Thursday night in a mercy -rule, District 1-5A victory over the Knights (0-6, 0-3).

Los Alamos, the last remaining undefeated team in Class 5A and ranked sixth in the division, is 6-0 overall and 3-0 in league play.

Friday (Sept. 26)

---> Highland 48, Valley 20

Highland executed its ground-and-pound offensive attack with maximum efficiency.

The Hornets ran at will against Valley, spoiling the Vikings’ homecoming with a 48-20 victory in a District 1-5A matchup at Milne Stadium on Friday. Highland (4-2, 2-1) reached its season high for points by the second quarter as it raced to a 42-7 halftime advantage in what was a surprisingly lopsided outcome.

“We focused on us,” said Highland coach Philip Lovato. “We’ve been making a lot of mistakes the past few weeks. It had nothing to do with the opponent; it had everything to do with us. We cleaned up a lot of mistakes.”

---> St. Pius 34, Silver 14

While the Silver Colts didn’t have to deal with strong-armed St. Pius quarterback Isaiah Carpenter on Friday night, unfortunately they did have to face one of the state’s elite running backs, Hershul Olloway Jr.

The junior speedster scored three touchdowns in the first quarter alone for Class 4A’s second-ranked Sartans (4-0), who ripped No. 5 Silver 34-14 in their District 2-4A opener.

“We played real well,” St. Pius coach Curtis Flakes II said. “We finished some drives, and I definitely like the way we performed. And our defense was lights out.”

At Ivan Head Stadium in Santa Fe, junior Jahari Morehead scored five touchdowns for the Eagles (2-3, 1-1 in 2-6), part of a huge offensive night for Eldorado which snapped a three-game losing streak with its victory over the Demons (3-3, 1-2).

Eldorado had over 500 yards of total offense.

---> Las Cruces 55, Organ Mountain 0

At the Field of Dreams, quarterback Gunnar Guardiola had a perfect passing night — 15-for-15 — as he threw for five touchdowns for Class 6A’s top-ranked Bulldawgs (6-0, 2-0 in 3-6A) against the Knights (2-4, 0-2).

Guardiola only played about 2½ quarters in the victory.

He threw three of his five TD passes to Francisco Winnikoff, including a 35-yard screen pass for a score on Las Cruces’ first play from scrimmage.

At Bulldog Bowl, Tootie McNeil had two interceptions, one that he returned for a touchdown, and Bryce Parra rushed for 153 yards and two scores as Class 5A’s top-ranked team (5-1, 3-0 in 2-5A) routed their rivals, the third-ranked Wildcats (2-4, 1-2).

Parra also caught a TD pass, one of four thrown by quarterback Derrick Warren, who was 19-for-30 and 251 yards.

---> Portales 51, Valencia 14

In Tomé, visiting Portales turned two early turnovers by fourth-ranked Valencia into touchdowns, including a scoop-and-score, and the previously winless and unranked Rams (1-5, 1-1 in 2-4A) belted the Jaguars (3-3, 1-1) by a surprisingly lopsided 51-14 score.

---> Chaparral 27, Manzano 16

In Chaparral, Class 4A’s seventh-ranked Lobos (5-1, 2-0 in 2-4A) led the whole way against visiting, eighth-ranked Manzano (4-2, 1-1) and ended the Monarchs’ four-game winning streak.
