Thursday (Oct. 16)

---> ABQ High 17, Eldorado 14

Roughly half the fourth quarter was still left when the Albuquerque High Bulldogs started the most meaningful drive of the night.

Nearly six minutes later, the Bulldogs had probably kept their prep football season alive.

AHS quarterback Julian Madera scored on a 7-yard run with just 29 seconds to go, and the Bulldogs, down 11 late in the third quarter, pulled out an exciting 17-14 win over Eldorado on Thursday night at Wilson Stadium.

The Bulldogs went 88 yards on 12 plays — 11 of them rushes — to beat the Eagles (3-5, 2-3).

Friday (Oct. 17)

---> Silver 21, Albuquerque Academy 17

Another week, another fantastic — and unpredictable — finish in District 2-4A prep football.

Albuquerque Academy, riding some recent momentum, stood poised Friday afternoon to claim another district win, having come from two touchdowns down to lead visiting Silver in the fourth quarter.

But it was the Colts who summoned some late-game magic, adding more chaos in the state’s wildest district.

Silver senior running back Michael James Jimenez scored on a 1-yard run — and the ball barely crossed the goal line — with 31 seconds remaining on fourth down, and the seventh-ranked Colts’ clutch drive allowed them to hit the road back home with a dramatic 21-17 victory over the sixth-ranked Chargers.

---> Rio Rancho 28, Volcano Vista 27 (OT)

Sometimes, this is the way the math works in football.

Take the seventh-ranked Rio Rancho Rams, for example, a team that never led, not even for one second, through 48 minutes of their crucial District 1-6A showdown against No. 3-ranked Volcano Vista.

But they won the overtime, they won the night, and they won the most important game of their season.

Quarterback Micah Takahashi’s 8-yard run on third down in OT put the Rams ahead, and the Rio Rancho defense moments later stood extremely tall on a 2-point conversion try by the Hawks as the Rams escaped the West Side with an exciting 28-27 victory at Nusenda Community Stadium.

---> Cleveland 54, Piedra Vista 0

In Rio Rancho, the Storm’s seniors made sure to make the most of their last home game.

Five different seniors scored for second-ranked Cleveland (7-1, 3-0 in 1-6A) in an offensive explosion.

“A big thing for us was just going out there and having fun,” senior quarterback Jordan Hatch said. “It’s business, but these are our brothers. We don’t have a lot of time left.”

Hatch and his band of brothers put up 34 first-half points, a bounce back from last week’s season low, 27-point performance against Cibola.

In Los Lunas, the Tigers (5-3, 4-1 in 2-6A) used a high-powered ground game and a stingy defense to post a shutout over the Demons (4-4, 2-3).

Meanwhile, the Demons were held to less than 75 total yards in the first half, and were unable to mount a serious threat throughout the game.

Four different Tigers found the end zone, led by Jagger Casillas who had a pair of touchdowns.

Saturday (Oct. 18)

---> St. Pius 50, Chaparral 0

Saturday afternoon’s Class 4A prep football matchup between two of the top three ranked teams in New Mexico was as anticlimactic as they come.

In a stunning one-sided result, No. 2-ranked St. Pius demolished No. 3 Chaparral 50-0 in a District 2-4A contest at Milne Stadium. The game was over by halftime.

And first place in 2-4A changed hands in the process.

The Sartans (6-1, 3-1) now occupy first place alone, with the Lobos (6-3, 3-2) having lost two in a row.

“Pretty cool to watch our kids have their best game of the year,” St. Pius coach Curtis Flakes II said.

---> Cibola 28, Farmington 10

In the late game Saturday at Nusenda Community Stadium, the ninth-ranked Cougars (5-3, 1-2 in District 1-6A) picked up a crucial victory, overcoming a sloppy first half and ending a two-game skid with a victory over the Scorpions (1-7, 0-3).

Hayes Baum, Cibola’s senior linebacker, had a pick-6 in the win for Cibola, which scored 21 unanswered points in the second half. Damian Suarez had a nice outing for the Cougars, rushing for nearly 100 yards with a TD.
