Will the Lobos be ranked? Here is Geoff Grammer's AP Top 25 men's basketball ballot
New Mexico players celebrate by Utah State forward Karson Templin after forcing a jump ball in the second half of Saturday's game, in Logan, Utah.
The UNM Lobos are off to an 18-4 start to the season. Their 10-1 conference record is the best Mountain West start the Lobos have ever had and they are alone in first place in the league standings.
After Saturday's 82-63 road blowout victory at Utah State, the Lobos are sure to gain plenty more votes in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll, which is released each Monday morning during the season.
The Lobos had two voters rank them last week (one at No. 23 and one at No. 25), earning them four points in the "others receiving votes" section of the poll, 11 spots out of being ranked. The No. 25 team last week, defensing national champion Connecticut, had 131 points. So, the Lobos have a lot of ground to make up to get ranked.
But 11 Top 25 teams lost this past week and Utah State, the team UNM blew out on the Aggies' home court on Saturday night, was three spots away from the Top 25 last week with 99 points — votes with a decent chance of shifting over to the Lobos after the head-to-head result.
Journal staff writer Geoff Grammer is one of the AP's 62 national voters. He did not have either UNM or Utah State ranked on his ballot last week.
Here is the ballot he submitted for Monday's poll:
