Dr. Janice Elaine (Barnard) Micali 12/26/1939 to 4/13/2025 Jan was born in Louisville, KY to William H. Barnard and Hazelle Eva Barnard, a doctor and nurse. She graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1957 and Vanderbilt University with a BS in Nursing in 1961, She became Charge Nurse, Surgery Unit at Vanderbilt University Hospital in 1962 then in 1963, an Instructor at Vanderbilt's School of Nursing. In 1965 Jan moved to Atlanta for a Master's in Nursing from Emory University. Here she joined Grady Hospital as Educational Coordinator, Maternal and Infant Care. Her experiences with poor, adolescent mothers led to her first publication "Peer Group Instruction for Primigravid Adolescents." Jan wrote to family, "I loved working at Grady but it was a grant funded project that would not go on forever." Albuquerque became her home when Jan was recruited for a nursing education program at Presbyterian Hospital in 1970. A couple of years later, the president of Presbyterian Hospital suggested that Jan move the program to CNM (Central New Mexico Community College, then named Technical-Vocational Institute) to expand the number of health care programs being offered and increase the number of graduates. Jan joined CNM as the Dean of Heath Occupations in 1972. In 1980, Jan co-authored Practical Nursing: Curricula and Competencies, published by the National League for Nursing. In 1986 she earned her PhD in Adult Education from the University of New Mexico. In 1997 Jan created the Community College Leadership Institute at CNM. Nine years later, CNM renamed this program the Micali Leadership Institute to recognize Jan's outstanding work. Jan retired as VP of Student Services in 2003 and joined the CNM Foundation Board for the next 15 years. Jan's "admirable service to the Foundation Board has provided many more students with the opportunity to improve their lives through a CNM education. In addition to being an engaged board member at the Foundation, she was one our largest individual contributors, including establishing the Dr. Janice E. Micali Scholarship Endowment in 2007." The scholarship is for single parents with primary custody of their children. Jan's daily diaries were filled with appointments for "Parish Visits" to Covenant Presbyterian Church members who might need a lift, helping hand, or just a smile and hello. Pastor Seth Finch describes Jan as "a pillar of the church." He attributes church growth to members who recalled Jan teaching Sunday School 30 years ago. She loved singing in the choir, helping with fundraisers and transitioning people coming out of jail back into the community. Jan also chaired the Council of Chief Instructional Officers of New Mexico Community Colleges from 1994-1996. She was Board Member for APS New Futures School, Member of the Editorial Review Board for Nursing and Health Care, and a Member of the Albuquerque Public Schools Professional Standards Committee. She donated to numerous charities for disadvantaged and abused children, education, and her church. She loved to sing, bake and read. Family and friends were fortunate to receive Jan's incredible cookies and pies at birthdays, potlucks, fundraisers and special occasions. She had a passion for traveling and visited Europe, China, Russia, India, Egypt, Slovenia and Peru. In 2013 Jan was inducted into the Silver Horizons Senior Hall of Fame for lifetime commitment to community service: youtu.be/QAHfHLjWTs0?si=s9VEzfIQmTDowBFu When Jan decided to move to La Vida Llena Retirement Community, some of Jan's extended family, including Vanderbilt college roommate Linda Barr and Covenant Presbyterian Church members would be neighbors. She loved the community and explained that it could provide assisted living, skilled nursing and health care if she ever needed it. In 2021 she was diagnosed with dementia. Her doctors said that her intellect allowed her to overcome many of its effects. This, along with her decision to move to La Vida Llena, support from her friends and the wonderful congregation at Covenant Presbyterian Church, allowed Jan to remain in her home and largely independent until just a year ago. Friends and caretakers said that she was gracious until the end. Jan's brother, Bill Barnard of Walnut Creek, CA, preceded her in death. She is survived by her brothers Tom Barnard and his wife Mary of Lexington, KY and Jim Barnard and his wife Sherry of Elizabethtown KY and her sister-in-law, Nancy Barnard of Walnut Creek, CA. Also by 3 nephews Frank, John and David Barnard, niece, Jenny Miles, lots of grandnieces and grandnephews and, or course, her extended family in Albuquerque. Contributions in her memory may be made to Jan's scholarship fund. Look for the "Donate to the Dr. Janice E.
