Janis L. Derrick Janis Lorraine Derrick passed away on March 25, 2025, in Fontana, California, at the age of 77. Born on November 12, 1947, in Glendale, California, Janis was a dedicated educator with a lifelong passion for learning. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Master of Arts degree, along with a lifetime California teaching credential. Throughout her career, she taught every grade level from kindergarten through twelfth grade, serving as a substitute teacher, full-time educator, and home school coordinator. She played a key role in founding the Loma Prieta Home School Program, helping it grow from three students to over 150. Janis's curiosity extended beyond the classroom. A self-taught astronomer and geologist, she found joy in exploring the sciences. She was also an artist who worked with oils, watercolors, multimedia painting, and ceramics. Her creativity knew no boundsshe not only painted but also built an off-the-grid home with her husband and cultivated a love for gardening. Faith was central to Janis's life. A practicing Christian Scientist and devoted student of religion and theology, she sought spiritual understanding throughout her years. She was known for her kindness and generosity, treating everyone she met with warmth and compassion. Children held a special place in her heartshe treated them as equals and earned their trust and affection in return. Janis is survived by her beloved husband, Scott; her daughter, Angelia; and her granddaughters, Jessica and Julia. She was predeceased by her father, Thomas Seeley; mother, Helen Seeley; and brother, Richard. Janis's legacy is one of honesty, kindness, generosity, and an unwavering dedication to learning and family. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
