John Marvin Wells It is with profound sadness that the family of John Marvin Wells announces his passing on August 20, 2025. Born in Albuquerque on December 17th, 1941, John graduated from Highland High in 1959 and married his High School sweet-heart, Diane Winter, while studying law at the University of New Mexico. John practiced law in Albuquerque for 47 years where he litigated for the little guy and was always looking to right any injustice. John gained some local comedic notoriety when his lawsuit against the Village of Los Ranchos over a ticket resulted in a higher posted speed limit on Rio Grande Boulevard and a corresponding comic in the Albuquerque Journal. In 2000, he filed a lawsuit against the National Park Service resulting in more equitable access to the Grand Canyon for private river-runners. An avid lover of the outdoors, John trained mountain survival skills to Peace Corps volunteers in the 1960's and was part of a team that helicoptered and climbed into the Sandia's to move wreckage of TWA flight 260 out of view of the then under-construction Sandia Peak tram. Always ready for a hiking or rafting adventure, John guided a raft down most of the rivers in the American west including more than 13 trips on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, his favorite place. His love for his wife Diane was immeasurable and unwavering throughout their 63 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife Diane, his daughter Shawn (Jeff) Jankowski, his son Aaron (Brenda) Wells, and his five wonderful grand-children; Kevin, Tristan, Alyx, Kaleb, and Judson. May his spirit of adventure and love of the outdoors live on in them and those he befriended during his time with us; but, as he always said, "What is Time?" A memorial service will be held at 11:30am, September 10, 2025 at Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church, 1801 Montano Rd, Albuquerque, NM 87107. In lieu of flowers, it is requested a donation be made to the Natural Resources Defense Council.
