Mary Kathleen (Katie) Woodward Mary Kathleen was born to Rosalind Lenny McKenna and James Edward McKenna in Lewistown, Montana in the former St Joseph hospital on December 11, 1933, joining her only sibling, James E. McKenna and completing the family. She died July 12, 2025 in Lewistown. Sadly, Rosalind died shortly after Kathleen's fifth birthday and Christmas and settling into a new family home. Fortunately, Kathleen was placed in many wonderful temporary homes and cared for with much love, the first being Mrs. Gertrude Crowley who at the time also had her granddaughter, Gay, living with her. They became best friends and started first grade together at St Leo's. Kathleen graduated in 1951, continuing on to the University of Montana in Missoula where she was reacquainted with Lee Woodward, who she had first met in high school. Katie and Lee were married in December of 1952 at St Leos. After Lee graduated in the spring of 1952, they were thrilled to be stationed in Germany while Lee fulfilled his military obligation. Kathleen said it was the best honeymoon one could have as they traveled Europe when Lee wasn't working. Many of the friends they met in Worms, Germany remain dear friends to this day. Upon return to the States, Lee and Katie both returned to Missoula where she finished her degree and Lee studied geology. Kathleen claimed (sometimes correctly) that the best gift was the arrival of their children, Leslie Ellen, followed the next year by Ann Lenny, then Joseph Hutchison, and finally Madeline Lee. Lee obtained a teaching position at Olympic College in Bremerton, WA and the family lived there for several years where Katie began her long career of volunteering, mostly with youth. In Bremerton, she helped raise funds to build the new church, she was a room mother and she led a Girl Scout troop. When the family moved to Albuquerque, NM, Katie was active helping Lee's geology students, leading Girl Scout troops, running the elementary PTA, being a room mother for all the kids, volunteering in politics, the St Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, the State Hospital Association, and helping the Youth Volunteers (Candy Stripers) at the hospital. Katemo, as she was called by her children and all their friends, made the house in Albuquerque a home for over sixty years. Kathleen loved to bring the family to the cabin in Maiden every year where she hosted many get togethers with family and friends from all over the country. She joked about getting her teeth fixed and indoor plumbing at the cabin in the same year. She especially loved reconnecting each summer with her Lewistown friends and family. When asked what she was especially proud of and with no hesitation, she replied "my children". Leslie lives in Tucson, AZ and has two beautiful boys, Patrick (Lauren) and Brian. Ann is married to Paul Bockus and lives in Bozeman, MT. Joseph and Liz live in Maryville, TN and have two children, Savannah (Ben) and Mac (Mariana). Madeline has two beautiful daughters, Kathleen (Tatsu) and Ann and they all live in the Seatttle area. Katie has chosen to donate her body to the university in Bozeman with the understanding there are no refunds or returns. Kathleen's ashes will be scattered along side Lee's in the Neihart cemetery. If anyone feels so inclined, Kathleen would be honored to have a donation made to the Lewistown Public Library (701 W. Main St., Lewistown, MT 59457) where she loved to spend time as a child.
