Robert L. Matheny Robert "Bob/Butch" Lavasco Matheny, a devoted husband, father, friend, educator, leader, and Christian, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was 92. Bob was a student, faculty member, and administrator at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) in Portales where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees. He served as ENMU's president from 1983 to 1989. Dr. Matheny is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Sandra, his daughter Cali, and his daughters Nelda and Monica from his first marriage to Patricia Hart from 1951-1972. Bob is remembered by the many whose lives he touched for his quiet humility and strength, wise counsel, endless optimism, contagious smile and laugh, compassion, and integrity. Bob's life was celebrated in a private family service. The family encourages donations to the ENMU Matheny Scholarship fund.
