William Ingersoll Rose William Ingersoll Rose, 81, died at home in Eagle Harbor, Michigan, on July 17, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and volcanologist, Bill dedicated his life to loving deeply, exploring the Earth, and helping others understand geology and volcanoes. Born in Detroit in 1944 and raised in Corrales, New Mexico, Bill's passion for geology began early. He received Bachelor's and Ph.D. degrees from Dartmouth College, where he was mentored by geology professor Dick Stoiber and was introduced to Nanno, the love of his life. Bill and Nanno married in 1967 and raised two sons, Chris and Jason, in Houghton, Michigan. Bill taught geology at Michigan Tech for over 40 years, mentoring students and advancing global volcano research. In retirement, he led Keweenaw geoheritage tours and cherished time with his family and his former graduate students.
