The smell of manure mixed with dust and whiffs of cologne filled the arena Thursday as the largest rodeo in the state kicked off inside Tingley Coliseum.

Rodeo riders clad in leather chaps adorned with fringed edges and boots with shiny spurs stretched and wrapped their wrists backstage for the Chevron PRCA Rodeo at the New Mexico State Fair.

Many riders bowed their heads and said a prayer as they prepared to test out the horsepower of the broncos, with the goal of hanging on for 8 seconds, and conquer the 2,000-pound bulls in the ring.

The rodeo will continue Sunday with the PRCA Rodeo matinee on the final day of the fair.
