Food Truck Fridays: City plans to bring back popular event series
Alan Jordan said the city’s annual Food Truck Fridays event series on occasion saved his “week or month.”
The exposure also may have played a part in securing a top-five spot for his hot dog cart, Good Dawg, in Albuquerque the Magazine’s 2024 Best Hot Dogs rankings.
“During the warmer months, it’s great over there,” said Jordan, who owns the business. “I have a good following. I’ve been doing it for a while now over there, so I’m connected with the community.”
Jordan and many others in Albuquerque’s food truck scene are in luck: Food Truck Fridays are back starting next month.
The city announced Monday that vendors can begin applying to participate in the event, which takes place at Civic Plaza each Friday from March 24 through Nov. 14. The Fourth of July, which falls on a Friday, is the lone exception.
So far, 20 vendors have applied, city Economic Development Department spokesperson Sara Mannal told the Journal. The deadline for vendors to apply is Feb. 26. A lottery and drawing will take place shortly after.
“I think it’s very exciting that we have a really diverse group of food trucks that want to be a part of Food Truck Fridays,” Mannal said.
Mannal said she does her best to allow all vendors who apply to participate. Last year, out of the 58 vendors who applied, 55 participated, Mannal said.
“I try very hard to accommodate all food trucks that apply and even if they are behind the deadline date, I will do a second round and insert them,” Mannal said.
Another vendor excited for the event to return is Mike Gutierrez, owner of Wow Wow Lemonade.
“We would go down there when it was snowing, we would go down there when it was raining. We never canceled a single food truck Friday,” Gutierrez said. “We were always the ones that were out there.”
Gutierrez added that in addition to the money Food Truck Fridays brings, the exposure has brought customers out to Wow Wow’s brick-and-mortar in Rio Rancho.
