Nob Hill businesses stay open later for Christmas shoppers

With only two weeks left to get the Christmas shopping done, many Nob Hill businesses will be staying open later than usual for the annual Twinkle Light Parade on Saturday.
Nob Hill shops like Astro-Zombies, Masks y Mas and Off-Broadway keep their doors open for holiday shoppers from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., which is later than normal.
Jakey Onassis is a personal shopper at Off-Broadway, a vintage clothing and costume store in Nob Hill.
“We participate every year,” Onassis said.
The store has been in business for the last four decades.
She said the extra hours make people aware that Off-Broadway exists.
Onassis said it has taken a lot of hard work for the local shop to stay open for as long as it has.
Just down the street, employees at Masks y Mas were putting up snowflake Christmas lights in the shop windows last week.
The store, already vibrant with color, sells sugar skulls and other Hispanic art and décor.
“It is a big event for us,” said store owner Kiko Torres. “We prepare for it all year round.”
Riley Hughes, a clerk at Astro-Zombies, agreed that the Christmas-themed shopping events keep local stores afloat during the holiday season.
Astro-Zombies is at the corner of Central and Richmond, providing customers with comic books, action figures and Lego sets. The store not only sells the items but will purchase collectibles as well.
“Times are tough, we are seeing an increase in selling,” Hughes said.
