An extra day to save a life: City of Albuquerque hosting free leap day pet adoption event

The Animal Welfare Department has announced its leap year celebration, "Leap Out of the Shelter" adoption event, which starts Feb. 29 and runs through the weekend.

The adoption fee will be waived for the more than 700 pets available for adoption across the city.

It's not only dogs and cats up for adoption, AWD also has chickens, rabbits, turtles and a parakeet up for grabs.

Each pet comes spayed or neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations.

Additionally, pets receive one free initial pet visit and dog adoptions also include a free dog training class.

West Side Animal Shelter, 11800 Sunset Gardens SW, 505-768-1975

Lucky Paws, 6600 Menaul NE, 505-768-1975

HOURS: Feb. 29 through March 3

East Side: 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

West Side: 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Lucky Paws: 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday; Noon to 5:30 p.m. Sunday
