This winter, New Mexicans can expect more active storm systems bringing more rain and snow across the state as the El Niño brings wetter weather to the region.

However, temperatures are still above average for this time of year, according to Clay Anderson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albuquerque.

“Here in Albuquerque in the valley, there's not really much of a chance of a white Christmas,” Anderson said, “(But) there will definitely be some snow up in the mountains.”

Christmas Day is forecast to be a sunny day, with the high around 40° Fahrenheit in Albuquerque.

There is a chance for rain over the weekend, though.

“We do have very high chances for rain Friday night into Saturday,” Anderson said. “And … if we were going to see snow, it would be a Saturday night.”

Anderson said areas above 7,500 feet in elevation could expect snow, which could potentially impact travel in the area Saturday night into Sunday morning.

“The snow that falls west of Albuquerque Saturday night into Sunday morning, in particular, could cause some brief issues along the Continental Divide," Anderson said. "You know … maybe I-40, U.S. 550 on the Continental Divide, which is near Cuba.”

Anderson said along Interstate 25 could have some snow accumulation around Raton Pass that could also impact travel over the weekend.
