Coffee flavored with Pinon nuts are a local specialty in New Mexico.

Pinon nuts have a naturally rich buttery texture and flavor. Unless other flavors are added, the resulting coffee will have a nutty flavor and will likely be less acidic compared to a standard roast. Expect a smooth brew just like chocolate without the unpleasant sharpness of standard coffee.

Here are five of New Mexico’s most highly reviewed businesses to try this special brew (according to Google reviews).

3 Questions Coffee Shop, Living Harvest Bakery - San Lorenzo

This local family business is a community favorite. This business receives raving reviews for customer service, quality, and philanthropy values. Customer reviews suggest this is a must-try for chocolate pinon coffee. Pro tip: this business may be cash only, so bring enough for your order.

A reviewer said: “This is an amazing place run by an amazing family. The cinnamon rolls are delicious and you should try the chocolate pinion coffee.”

Address: (Past Mile Marker 2) 2 El Otro Lado Road, (575) 536-3267

Pinon Coffee House - Rio Rancho

With locations around Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, the name says it all. Grab one of their house-made pastries like an exclusive Biscochito Donut or Piñon Bear Claw, baked fresh daily. All of their cold brew, iced coffee, and blended coffee beverages come with coffee ice cubes so your drink won't get watered down while you enjoy it Tip: order online in advance for fast and easy pick-up.

A customer review: “This place is a vibe!!!! Coffee is smooth, the flavor is well balanced. You don’t get that strong coffee taste. If you are not a coffee drinker you will like the flavor of a pinion latte. I got a “Mexican Spiced Chocolate Latte”. They have real plants that all have their names labeled on them. The ambiance is everything. The music is on point. Not the place you just want to grab and go. Come in relax take in the piñon.”

Address: 1761 Rio Rancho Blvd. Southeast, (505) 404-0659

Hours: Sunday - Saturday 6 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Taos Java - Taos

This Taos gem serves pinon coffee in an artistic and welcoming environment. The interior is decorated with local artwork and comfortable furniture, you won't know if you're in an art studio or a coffee house. It’s a popular spot to enjoy this New Mexico brew.

A customer review: “I also had a cup of their Pinon coffee. It had a very subtle and enjoyable taste. Now I have to figure out how to get more. (Not many pinon trees in Michigan.) Even better, it tasted like real coffee.”

Address: 1006 Paseo Del Pueblo Sur, (575) 758-7770

Hours: Saturday - Sunday 7 a.m. - 12 p.m. and Monday - Friday 6 a.m. - 1 p.m.

The New Baking Company - Santa Fe

Guests love this trendy spot, especially for their pinon coffee! This wonderful family-run place serves reliably delicious and thoughtfully prepared fresh food along with locally loved coffee.

Customer review: “Visited SF for five days and fortunately this was first place we went for breakfast. Ended up here four out of the five days in down. If's it's not broke don't fix it! The croissant with bacon, cheese & PEPPERS is just too good for breakfast. Toss in the potatoes with PEPPERS and you're good to go for the day. Peppers make everything better in Santa Fe. Excellent deserts too. Loved the cinnamon twist. Nice friendly staff as well. Discovered pinon coffee here as well. Now ordering that online! Good vegetarian options as well.”

Address: 504 West Cordova Road, (505) 557-6435

Hours: Open 7 days a week from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The Cornerstone Bakery & Cafe - Ruidoso

Head to this down-to-earth staple for breakfast plates, light fare, and (apparently) some very delicious pinon coffee. This family operation is fueled by love and lots of coffee.

“Have loved this place for years! It is one of the reasons we like to visit Ruidoso. The BEST breakfast is so tasty! The baked goods are very good also. Cute atmosphere and lots of little gift items available to purchase. Plus the self serve coffee is Soo good! Their pinon coffee is the perfect smooth accompaniment to breakfast. Great service also!”

Hours: Closed Thursday, open Friday - Wednesday 7 a.m. - 3 p.m.
