The Public Service Company of New Mexico is warning customers of an uptick in scam callers posing as PNM representatives this holiday season.

So far, there have been 355 reported scam calls, a news release said.

The release said scammers will usually demand between $200-$500 from residential customers and more than $1,000 from businesses.

The scammers will often ask that the payment be made via gift card or wire transfer.

PNM has released these safety tips regarding scammers:

  • If you suspect you are being called by a scammer, hang up immediately and call PNM's official line at 888-DIAL-PNM (1-888-342-5766).

  • PNM will never call customers on a holiday or after hours: Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

  • If a scammer is claiming you are behind on your bills, texting #BAL to 78766 will get your account balance.

  • If a caller says you are going to be disconnected, but your bill does not have a bold disconnect notice on page one, it is a scam.

  • Report suspicious activity to PNM as soon as possible.
