Trunk-loads of excitement: ABQ BioPark's Rozie the elephant is pregnant
Pop the alcohol-free champagne, Rozie the Asian elephant who resides at the ABQ BioPark is pregnant, according to the city of Albuquerque.
“We’re thrilled about Rozie’s pregnancy,” said Amber Alink, curator of elephants and primates, in a statement. “Everyone at the BioPark is looking forward to a new calf joining our family and continuing our commitment to conserving this endangered species.”
The calf is expected to be born in December after a 22-month-long pregnancy.
Rozie was born 31 years ago to the BioPark's elephant herd. Her mother, Alice, is still a part of the herd.
A team of animal care experts is regularly monitoring Rozie to ensure a healthy pregnancy, a news release said.
The release added Asian elephants are an endangered species and the wild populations are in decline due to "habitat loss and fragmentation," and the zoo has been designated an Elephant Breeding Facility by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Elephant Species Survival Plan.
