Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center enjoys Mardi Gras fun

Colorful masks and bead necklaces were seemingly everywhere at Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center in Southeast Albuquerque on Tuesday as center guests celebrated Mardi Gras.

People who entered the center had the option to decorate their own custom Mardi Gras masks with jewels, stickers and sparkles. After completing their masks, they had the choice of taking their masks home or pinning them on the wall.

Slices of king cake were also available. A Mardi Gras and New Orleans tradition, the cake is a ring-shaped pastry typically covered in icing and topped with yellow and purple edible sprinkles or glitter. Traditionally, a porcelain or plastic baby is hidden in the cake, and whoever finds the baby in his or her slice is supposed to receive good luck. In lieu of a plastic baby, the center hid an apricot in the cake instead.

The center's cafeteria tables were also decorated in traditional Mardi Gras greens, yellows and purples.
