Roughly 35 Albuquerque community members gathered at the Alice K. Hoppes African American Pavilion at EXPO New Mexico on Sunday to hold a candlelight vigil in honor of World AIDS Day.

Organized by the University of New Mexico’s Truman Health Services, the event featured songs performed by the New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus and a moment of silence for those lost to AIDS. People comforted each other as tears were shed during this intimate moment.

Established in 1988 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, who were two public information officers for the Global Program on AIDS at the World Health Organization, World AIDS Day is one of 11 official global public health campaigns recognized by the World Health Organization. It is held every year on Dec. 1.
