A step back in time: Albuquerque International Balloon Fiestas from the past 51 years
This year marks the 51st anniversary of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
Back in 1972, balloons were not so common in Albuquerque, and Sid Cutter was the go-to guy as a balloon pilot himself and acquainted with other balloonist in New Mexico and around the country.
Cutter manged to get 21 balloons committed to coming to a balloon rally for the 50th anniversary of KOB radio, now known as KKOB radio.
Several thousand people showed up for the event, even though 13 balloons ended up attending.
Since then, it has grown into the international event it is today and this year, spectators have the added bonus of a solar eclipse to look forward to, in addition to the spectacular balloons.
