Animal, vegetable and mineral: 7 events for this weekend
If you were going to hold a gem and mineral show in New Mexico, it seems very appropriate to have it in Silver City. Sorry Chloride, I know you’re a mineral too. Here are seven events for this weekend that also rock.

1Got the blues
Canyon Blues and Jazz is concluding its summer season with its Blues Festival at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3. The concert will feature Hillary Smith & Chill House, Memphis P-Tails and Levi Platero. Tickets are $18, plus fees, at cantonbluesandjazz.org, or $20 at the door. The Homestead Village is located at 221 Highway 165 in Placitas.
2Symphony under the stars
Enjoy “An Evening with the Philharmonic” at the ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden. The concert starts at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1. Tickets are $10-$25, with children 5 and under free, at holdmyticket.com. The Botanic Garden is located at 2601 Central Ave. NW.
3You might even spot a Lobo
Take a stroll around the University of New Mexico and learn about the nature and biodiversity of the campus with the Museum of Southwestern Biology. The free tour starts at noon Friday, Sept. 1, at the UNM Duck Pond, 1890 Roma Ave. NE. Can’t make it this week? Tours are planned for Fridays during the semester. RSVP at eventbrite.com.
4On display
Want to learn more about the Museum of Southwestern Biology? The museum is hosting a Studio Night from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1. The free event brings out the museum’s coolest specimens for display. RSVP at eventbrite.com. The Natural History Science Center is located in the Biology Annex on the UNM campus.
5Bump, set, spike
Head out to The Pit this weekend as the Lobo Invitational continues. The Lobo women’s volleyball team will take on St. John’s at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, and Utah Tech at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2. Tickets are $5, plus fees, at golobos.com. 6Celebrating 14 years
Baracutanga will be joined by Son Como Son and Super Verza for a night of music at Sister. The concert starts at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, and tickets are $15, plus fees, at eventbrite.com. Sister is located at 407 Central Ave. NW.
7What a gem!
The Grant County Rolling Stones Gem and Mineral Society is hosting the 38th annual Gem and Mineral Show in Silver City. From 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, check out vendors, museum and educational displays, lapidary demonstrations and more. Admission to the event is free at the Grant County Veteran’s Memorial Conference Center, 3031 U.S. Route 180 in Silver City.
