The third season of “Billy the Kid” begins streaming on Sunday, Sept. 28, on MGM+

Prior to stepping onto set, both Tom Blyth and Daniel Webber traveled to New Mexico to visit the sites where Billy the Kid and Jesse Evans roamed during the late 1800s.

The two have played the historical characters in three seasons of the MGM+ series “Billy the Kid.”

“We think a lot of the people of New Mexico and Arizona when we tell this story,” Blyth says. “We both visited (New Mexico) to try and kind of do a pilgrimage before we started. It’s cool to speak to people who are actually from that part of the world and know that history. We’ve seen that the passion (for the history) is still really strong down there.”

The third season of “Billy the Kid” starts streaming on MGM+ on Sunday, Sept. 28.

Blyth says the third season kicks off following the end of the Lincoln County War, as both Billy the Kid and Sheriff Pat Garrett have important issues to resolve.

“Billy is still at large, and the sheriff is out to capture him, dead or alive,” Blyth says.

A bounty has been placed on Billy the Kid’s head, and he has the opportunity to quit New Mexico altogether and pursue a future with Dulcinea, the love of his life.

“But he has unfinished business with Pat Garrett, who has betrayed him, and decides to stay,” Blyth says.

Meanwhile, Billy’s friend, rival and enemy Jesse Evans, played by Webber, remains in Lincoln, according to MGM+, searching for a newfound purpose and perhaps atonement for his sins. As the series comes to a close, Billy will fight to try to finally find the justice that has eluded him, even if he dies trying.

“This season, we’ve been able to pull back some more layers to our characters,” Webber says. “I feel like this season is a proper bookend to the series. We’ve jumped back in time to bring this history back to life. It’s been a great project to be part of. We knew we were going to tell a good story. The series was always slated for three seasons and it’s run its wonderful course.”

Blyth says bringing Billy the Kid to life was a dream for him.

“I feel so lucky that we were able to tell a full story,” Blyth says. “I got to keep coming back to my family. This production is a home for me.”

Blyth says, as an actor, he often looks for layers in a character and avoids playing a one-note character.

“Billy has all the parts of being human,” he says. “I am grateful for having other stuff to do. This season, Billy got to be a father and a lover, and this adds colors to playing him. It was exciting to see him grow up over the course of the series. I’ve always said that Billy the Kid was often misunderstood.”

Webber says for three seasons, Evans has worn a strong clear mask in public.

“This season, we see the mask crack,” Webber says. “We get to strip the layers back on Jesse and rediscover him in a whole new light. It was a challenge and we wanted to see how far we could pull those layers back. We brought the story back to Billy and Jesse. Despite their differences, they really were brothers to one another. They were able to get back to the truth of brotherhood.”

Though the series is filmed in Canada, Blyth and Webber know that the story, at its core, is a New Mexico story — a story of the Southwest.

“We all felt the pressure to honor the people that it’s about,” Blyth says. “I’m sure there’s lots of people down there who hope that their ancestors’ stories are being told.”
