Building a legacy: Indie rock outfit Real Estate releases 'Daniel,' plans stop at Meow Wolf
Alex Bleeker has struck the right balance with touring.
“As I get older, two weeks on and two weeks off, I think it’s good for the mind to spread it out,” Bleeker says. “The most difficult part of tour these days is getting my laundry together.”
Building a legacy: Indie rock outfit Real Estate releases 'Daniel,' plans stop at Meow Wolf
Bleeker is a member of indie rock band Real Estate.
The band formed in 2008 and is made up of Bleeker, Martin Courtney, Matt Kallman, Julian Lynch and Sammi Niss.
The band released its most recent album, “Daniel,” on Feb. 23. Its current tour will make a stop at Meow Wolf on Friday, March 8.
Real Estate opened its tour with a bingo party-type show.
“We will have bingo balls and call out the numbers,” he says. “We don’t know what songs we’ll play exactly. That’s the fun of it all. We’ve never played Meow Wolf before, and the concept would be right at home with the venue. Maybe we’ll do another bingo night at Meow Wolf.”
“Daniel” was recorded in a nine-day spree in RCA Studio A, in Nashville, Tennessee, with producer and songwriter Daniel Tashian.
While in Nashville, all five members of Real Estate shared a rental, cutting up in close quarters after the imposition of separation of these last few years.
Several days into recording, they were discussing album titles when someone suggested “Daniel,” simply because it seemed funny to bestow a human name upon a record.
Was it for Daniel Tashian? Maybe.
Was it a nod to The Replacements’ “Tim”? Possibly.
Was it the sign of a band that has now been around long enough to take its music seriously without taking itself or its perception too seriously? Absolutely.
“We were in the studio exactly a year ago,” he says. “From inception to release, it’s been two years. The album was mastered about eight months ago. The writing process began well before we stepped into the studio for the nine days. It was fast and I was jet-lagged.”
Bleeker says there were a couple songs that didn’t make the album.
“We were so focused that there was virtually nothing left on the cutting room floor,” he says. “We knew what we wanted to create when we went in and we accomplished it. It’s one of the most cohesive albums we’ve put out.”
With music spanning back to 2008, Real Estate’s music catalog is big.
Bleeker says the tour will definitely highlight “Daniel,” while sprinkling in material from the older albums.
“We will play the classics that people want to hear,” he says. “We haven’t been on tour for a while. We’re grateful to have an audience show up and experience the show with us. Looking back at our career, I couldn’t have imagined having played shows around the world. I love to go on tour, though a lot of people think it’s a drag. I love to be on stage and performing. I feel like one of the luckiest people on the planet. And I try not to lose sight over that.”
