Carlos Santana drops first single from career-spanning new album, 'Sentient'
Multi-Grammy Award-winning Rock & Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Carlos Santana has announced that his retrospective album, “Sentient,” will be released via Candid Records on March 28. The album’s first single, Santana’s never-before-released “Sentient version” of Smokey Robinson’s “Please Don’t Take Your Love,” is out today.
The album also boasts collaborations with Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Miles Davis, Paolo Rustichelli, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and Cindy Blackman Santana.
“Not that many artists can have that kind of company around themselves,” Carlos Santana told the Journal.
“Sentient” comprises 11 tracks, three of them previously unreleased, that chart the virtuoso guitarist’s musically adventurous career. All have been remastered.
Santana connected the title of the album to his lifelong pursuit of spirituality.
“A sentient being is more consistent with emanating light than darkness or fear or ignorance,” he said. “We all need clarity every day, because there’s so much darkness and ignorance outside.”
The guitarist also confirmed that he’s nearly recovered from a broken finger last month and that the injury will not interfere with his highly anticipated global “Oneness” tour.
As part of that tour, Santana will perform at Isleta Amphitheater on April 19.
