Clarinets, watercolor and 'Pearls of Change': 7 events for this week
Precious pearls
The New Mexico Women’s Chorus is bringing “Pearls of Change: 30 Years of Song” to two performances this weekend. First, the group will sing at the South Broadway Cultural Center, 1025 Broadway Blvd. SE, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18. Tickets run $12-$20 at nmwomenschorus.org, with prices increasing at the door. Then the group will sing at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at the Mesa View Methodist Church, 4701 Montano Road NW. Tickets run $13-$15 at nmwomenschorus.org, with prices increasing at the door.
Another goal
The Historic Lobo Theater will host the premiere of “Kings of Chaos,” a documentary based on the New Mexico United’s 2024 season. The screening starts at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17. Following the film, the team will host a short panel with players, coaches and staff. Tickets are $10-$25, plus fees, at eventbrite.com. The theater is located at 3013 Central Ave. NE.
Batter up!
The Palo Duro Senior Center is hosting a weekly baseball discussion group on Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. Baseball hobbyist and former journalist Gary Herron will lead the discussion. The senior center is located at 5221 Palo Duro Ave. NE.
From ‘trash’ to treasure
The Open Space Visitor Center is holding a free home composting basics class from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 18. Learn the basics of composting, tailored towards our high desert climate. The visitor center is located at 6500 Coors Blvd. NW.
Pick up the brush
If you’ve always wanted to learn the art of watercolor, there are two opportunities Tuesday, Jan. 21. The Holiday Park Community Center, 11710 Comanche Road NE, will be holding the class from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Or you can take the lesson at the Singing Arrow Community Center, 13200 Wenonah Ave. SE, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The classes are free.
‘Quoth the raven’
Celebrate the life, death and mystery of Edgar Allan Poe at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at the Painted Lady Bed and Brew. Learn about Poe’s life through a historical timeline, look at his contributions to the literary works, and round out the evening with a seance to try and commune with the author. The Ay! Clarumba Clarinet Quartet is coming to the Taylor Ranch Library for a free concert at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17. The group performs a variety of jazz, ragtime, classical and traditional Hispanic songs. The library is located at 5700 Bogart St. NW.
