The Dover Quartet will perform at the Simms Center for the Performing Arts at Albuquerque Academy at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10.
The program features Joseph Haydn’s “String Quartet in G minor, Op. 74, No. 3,” Florence Price’s “String Quartet No. 1 in G Major,” and Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Quartet No. 9 in E-flat Major, Op. 117.”
For Haydn, the string quartet was a place for experimentation, discovery and ultimately, artistic splendor. Like the piano sonata in Beethoven’s career, the quartet for Haydn became a laboratory where new ideas and methods could be tested and the tools of his trade honed. Haydn’s quartets became the proving ground for his symphonies.
Price was the first African American woman to have a composition performed by a major orchestra (the Chicago Symphony.)
The Dover Quartet features Joel Link and Bryan Lee on violins, Julianne Lee on viola and Camden Shaw on cello.
