Gate on Sandia Crest Road to assist law enforcement, NMDOT during winter storms
The New Mexico Department of Transportation is putting up a gate on Sandia Crest Road that will assist first responders and New Mexico Department of Transportation during inclement weather.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation is installing a gate on Sandia Crest Road (New Mexico 536).
But don’t worry, access will remain open unless a bad storm hits.
“This gate is part of an ongoing safety effort to assist law enforcement and NMDOT during inclement weather conditions when the road to the crest needs to be closed,” Kim Gallegos, New Mexico Department of Transportation District 3 spokesperson, said in an email. “The road to the ski basin will remain open, however, drivers must turn around when the gate is closed and can no longer go further up the mountain during the closures.”
N.M. 536 is a 13-mile road that leads to the Sandia Crest.
For road closures, Gallegos said, drivers can visit nmroads.com.
