AT PAGE 1 BOOKS

Khadijah VanBrakle will discuss and sign copies of her new young adult novel “My Perfect Family” from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.

The novel follows 16-year-old Leena who is close to her mom, but she has always dreamed of having a big family. Then everything changes for Leena with a single call from the hospital.

She learns she does have a family — an aunt and a grandfather. But her grandfather, Tariq, is very sick but wants to get to know Leena as much as she wants to know him.

But why did Leena’s mom hide him from her for so long?

The book is described as a warm, funny and poignant contemporary story of the complex relationship of mothers and daughters and what it means to be a Black Muslim woman in America. It’s also about forging your own path while still loving those who remain by your side.

“My Perfect Family” is VanBrackle’s second novel for young adults. The first was “Fatima Tate Takes the Cake.” It was an NAACP Image Award finalist for Outstanding Youth/Teens literature, a School Library Journal’s Teen Library Toolbox Favorite Young Adult Read and a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection.

VanBrackle lives in Albuquerque.

Page 1 Books is located at 5851 Eubank Blvd. NE.
