Magnificent mediums: Vasili Katakis and Mark Woody to showcase 'Our Private Collection' at Gallery ABQ
Vasili Katakis works in pastel.
Mark Woody works in oil.
Despite the difference in mediums, the Albuquerque-based artists are storytellers.
The pair will present, “Our Private Collection,” at Gallery ABQ. There is an opening reception from 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 1. The show will run through March 27.
“We love the show,” Katakis says. “When I was approached about the show, Mark was the first guy I thought of. We have a similar background.”
Woody says “Our Private Collection” is a retrospective for both artists.
“There’s no cohesiveness,” he says. “Our styles are what they are, and we work with different subjects. There are some pieces that are experiments, while others are award winners. Many of the pieces are some that we were reluctant to part with.”
In total, Woody will display 13 pieces, while Katakis will have 15 in the show.
Katakis says the show formed organically.
“Sometime last year, maybe while sipping bourbon and staring at the paintings in my studio, Mark and I were talking art as we usually do when we realized that between selling and serving up paintings to collectors, family and friends — there were plenty left over,” Katakis says. “Perhaps enough to put somewhat of a retrospective together. We decided that our paintings have sufficiently aged (along with us) and now is the time to offer some of the work from our personal collection. Many of the paintings were juried into national and international shows, with some winning awards.”
