Roberto Minczuk

The New Mexico Philharmonic opens the 2023-24 Afternoon Classics series with “A Taste of Italy” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, at Immanuel Presbyterian Church.

Music director Roberto Minczuk will lead the orchestra through a new work by Daniel Steven Crafts — the world premiere of his Symphony No. 18, “The Dream-Mirror Dancer.”

The notes that accompany the Crafts work, written by Terry Hawkins, read as follows: “In the dream mirror, one can see whatever one desires. The reflex of creativity builds upon itself, enfolding worlds of otherwise hidden imagination. The doors of perception ever widen the splendor of possibility — riches ready to drop upon us if the passion and joy are strong enough.”

The philharmonic will then shift gears to an old favorite: Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4, “Italian.”

The orchestral powerhouse that is the Symphony No. 4 conveys Mendelssohn’s impressions of Italy and the Mediterranean region during an 1830-31 visit.
