Spelling is a fundamental skill.

The 2024 New Mexico State Spelling Bee will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at the Albuquerque Little Theatre.

There will be breaks between noon and 12:45 p.m., and will end at 3:30 p.m. or when the final round has produced a champion.

The event is free and open to the public.

According to Pamela Chavez, New Mexico State Spelling Bee coordinator, the event will be held during the final weekend of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

The musical comedy centers on a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School.

Six quirky adolescents compete in the bee, run by three equally quirky grown-ups.

An unusual aspect of the show is that four real audience members are invited on stage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the six young characters.

Another amusing aspect of the show is that the official pronouncer (usually an improv comedian) provides ridiculous usage-in-a-sentence examples when asked to use the word in a sentence.

The Albuquerque Little Theatre was founded in 1930 and spent its first six years at the KiMo Theatre in Downtown Albuquerque.

In 1936, ALT moved into its present home, located at 224 San Pasquale Ave. SW, near Old Town.
