Tortoises, tunes and 'The Thing': 7 events for this weekend
Did you know a group of tortoises is called a creep? I assume after the pace of their walk and not their demeanor, because they seem like stand-up guys and gals. No word if they like Radiohead though.

1Music of New Mexico
The Corrales Historical Society’s “Speaker Series” kicks off 2024 with “Lone Piñon: Cultural Complexity and Abundance in New Mexico’s Music” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21. Lone Piñon is a collective of four expert musicians who perform their interpretation of New Mexico’s musical traditions. The Historic Old San Ysidro Church is located at 966 Old Church Road in Corrales. The event is free, but seating is limited to 150 people.
2Raising shell
The Bolston tortoises are the largest and rarest of the North American tortoise species and Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge will be receiving a group in 2024. On Saturday, Jan. 20, from 2-4 p.m. learn more about the project and these animals. The event is free at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, exit 169 off of I-25. The New Mexico Philharmonic will take you on a musical trip to Italy and Spain at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21. Tickets for this “Power Concert” event run $9-$20, plus fees, at holdmyticket.com. Immanuel Presbyterian Church is located at 114 Carlisle Blvd. SE.
4Put a stamp on it
Before emails, there were these things called letters. The Special Collections Library, 423 Central Ave. NE, is hosting a “Snail Mail Social” from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, in honor of Universal Letter Writing Week. The library will provide the stationery, pens and postal ephemera, you provide the words.

The Albuquerque Historical Society is holding “The Downtown Albuquerque Walking Tour: For People Who Prefer to Sit” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21. Historian Roland Penttila will present the history of Central Avenue at the Albuquerque Museum, 2000 Mountain Road NW. Admission to the museum and the presentation are free. The Guild Cinema will be showing John Carpenter’s horror classic “The Thing” at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20. Lessons will be learned about defrosting mysterious items you find. Tickets are $10, plus fees, at eventbrite.com. The Guild is located at 3405 Central Ave. NE.

Join the New Mexico Women’s Chorus as they “Sing a Rainbow” in two concert events. The group will take the stage at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 9315 Candelaria Road NE; and at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, at Mesa View Church, 4701 Montaño Blvd. NW.
