Instead of doom-scrolling online or mindlessly wandering the shelves of a big box store hoping to find the perfect gift, you can take a trip to one of the many holiday markets happening across New Mexico in November and December.

Several of the markets offer more than vendors selling their wares — eventgoers can enjoy music, food, performances and maybe even visit with Santa.

Winrock Wonderland is back for its second year and has added a Christmas tree lighting and a free performance of “The Nutcracker” featuring the New Mexico Ballet Company.

“We wanted to add to the experience for the holiday at Winrock,” David Stroud, Winrock event curator, said, “and being able to add a Christmas tree ... brings families to Winrock and throughout the whole holiday season.”

Geri Verble, Placitas Holiday Market coordinator, said that she has seen the holiday market grow year after year with more people attending to meet vendors.

“It’s festive and fun and joyful, and it’s a very community-generated event. And that’s what makes it so special,” said Verble.

The ABQ Rail Yards Market opens back up for the season with a full holiday market running over two weekends and a smaller indoor market. Alaska Piper, Rail Yards Market of Albuquerque executive director, said the market is an amazing opportunity for small businesses to get their homemade products to consumers.

“It’s also a great opportunity for locals and visitors alike to support over 200 small businesses in a one-stop shop,” Piper said. “We encourage folks to skip the big box store and shop small, because spending just $20 or $10 locally makes a big difference to a human as opposed to a big box store.”
