2026-27 draw application deadline is approaching
Draw deadlines are approaching for the upcoming hunting season in New Mexico.
Applicants have until 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, to apply for draw licenses for Barbary sheep, deer, elk, ibex, javelina, pronghorn and oryx.
The New Mexico Department of Wildlife reminds hunters that late 2025-26 harvest reports for deer, elk, pronghorn and turkey must be submitted before midnight on March 18 to avoid rejection of all 2026-27 draw applications. A late fee of $8 will apply.
Harvest reports for 2025-26 Barbary sheep, ibex, javelina, oryx and trapper license holders must be submitted before midnight on April 7 to avoid rejection of all 2026-27 draw applications.

Birding Big Year Contest deadline approaches
The final day to sign up for the New Mexico Department of Wildlife’s Birding Big Year Contest is April 1.
The contest, where participants are challenged to identify as many bird species as possible, is geared toward birders of all experience levels. There are novice, intermediate and advanced categories for both adults (18-64) and seniors (65 and up), as well as a youth category for ages 13-17.
Over 550 bird species call New Mexico home, including the state bird, the greater roadrunner, pinyon jays, burrowing owls and more.

NMDW to hold women’s beginner shotgun class
The New Mexico Department of Wildlife is hosting a free Adult Women’s Beginner Shotgun Class from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, at the Clovis Wing Shooting Complex and Archery Range in Clovis.
Participants will learn from certified instructors about the basics of shotguns and their operations. In the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to take part in live clay shooting.
All equipment and ammunition will be provided free of charge.

Free beginner warmwater fishing clinics coming in April
The Department of Wildlife is hosting two free Beginner Warmwater Fishing Workshops next month — Sunday, April 19, at the Northwest Area office in Albuquerque, and Sunday, April 26, at the Southwest Area office in Las Cruces.
Participants will learn about fishing techniques, fish identification, gear, knot tying, casting and more. The workshops are open to adults age 18 and older that have little to no warmwater fishing experience. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Monday, March 30, at wildlife.dgf.nm.gov.
