AT BOOKS ON THE BOSQUE

The Albuquerque bookstore is hosting two author events this week.

At noon Sunday, March 29, Zach Hively, publisher of Casa Urraca Press, is emceeing poetry readings by three poets — Dodici Azpadu (“Cloak”), Wayne Lee (“The Beautiful Foolishness”) and Scott Wiggerman (“Beginning and Ending with Emily: Ghazals and Golden Shovels”).

At 3 p.m. Saturday, April 4, Martin Stupich will discuss his new book, “Ore and Empire: Conquistadors to Guggenheims on the Camino Real.”

The large-format book draws parallels between the conscripted laborers of New Spain who for centuries dug silver from deep beneath the mountains of the Americas to the mining of silver — as well as gold, lead and copper — in Mexico and the western United States by the Gilded Age’s wealthy Meyer Guggenheim family.

The book tells the story of the Guggenheims’ mineral empire which operated under the name of American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO).

The smelter at El Paso was at ASARCO’s center, straddling the Mexico-Texas borderlands, the Rio Grande and the Camino Real. That 100-acre smelter — demolished in 2013 — is at the heart of Stupich’s book.

The book contains color photographs of the demolition of the copper and lead stacks and images of the site’s remediation.

An Albuquerque resident, Stupich is an internationally recognized photographer of industry and landscape.

Books on the Bosque is located at 6261 Riverside Plaza Lane NW.

AT COLLECTED WORKS

The Santa Fe bookstore presents two author-related events this week.

Jack Ratliff will discuss and sign copies of his new book, “Riding the White Bull: The Making of a Navy SEAL,” at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 29.

Ratliff’s memoir revisits his life of risk and adventure — at college in the 1950s, on the open road, holding down wild jobs and training to be a SEAL.

He will be in conversation with Santa Fe historian Hampton Sides.

At 6 p.m. Monday, March 30, three Santa Fe poets — Anne Haven McDonnell, Jenny George and Kim Parko — will read from their work.

Collected Works is at 202 Galisteo St. in Santa Fe.
