Albuquerque sobriety club raises over $18K to fix parking lot and will remain open
Pioneer Paving and Grading Operations Manager Terry Elliott measures the Desert Club of Albuquerque’s parking lot on Aug. 13. The club raised enough money to fix its parking lot and sidewalk and remain open.
A place that hosts substance abuse recovery meetings will remain open after raising enough money to fix its parking lot and sidewalk.
The Desert Club of Albuquerque — located at 4305 Mesa Grande NE — had until Monday to raise $18,000 to make the repairs to avoid cancellation of the club’s property liability insurance.
Robert Boughton, the club vice president and secretary, could not specify how much was raised but said, “We exceeded our goal pretty comfortably.”
“We’re just very grateful and, frankly, a little surprised at how much help we got, not just from the local recovery community, but the community at large and out of state,” Boughton said.
The club opened in 1957 and is where substance abuse recovery groups meet a couple of times a day and host events.
Work on the parking lot and sidewalk is expected to start next week and be finished in time for its barbecue on Sept. 27, he said.
