APD: Motorcyclist was seen doing 'burnouts' and 'doughnuts' moments before fatal crash

A motorcycle rider was spotted doing “burnouts” and “doughnuts” moments before the rider rear-ended an automobile, launching and killing the rider early Saturday morning in Northeast Albuquerque.

The Albuquerque Police Department said the crash happened around 1:45 a.m. on northbound Wyoming, near Comanche, where the motorcycle crashed into the rear of a black KIA. Police said the rider separated from the bike and was then hit by the automobile after the initial impact.

The rider, who was not identified by police, died at the scene.

“APD’s Fatal Crash Unit was dispatched to the scene and through the investigation it was determined that the motorcycle rider had been observed by officers prior to the crash in the parking lot of a business just south of Wyoming and Menual doing ‘burnouts’ and ‘doughnuts’ before leaving northbound at a high rate of speed,” APD said in a news release.

A short time later, police said, the call came in about the crash.

“Based on the evidence on scene, the crash appears to be the fault of the motorcycle rider,” APD said. “Speed and alcohol are considered to be factors for this crash.”

The investigation is ongoing.
